![]() Lots of fans of Doom and Gordon's work are not pleased with Bethesda over this, as you can probably imagine. In not-so-magical news, Mick Gordon recently revealed that he wasn't able to mix the vast majority of the tracks on the official Doom Eternal soundtrack release. I have absolutely no idea how Mick Gordon went about putting Doom 2's original poster into the spectrogram analysis for the track, nor do I have any clue how the original posted on the Doom subreddit managed to work out that there was a poster hidden in the track. I can't do a very good job of explaining this to you, so I'll let the excellent video below do the talking.Įven after watching the explainer above, I'm still convinced this is digital wizardry. I have tried working this out for myself, which led me down a whole rabbit hole of spectrogram analysis in music. I know what you're thinking: "How the hell is there a Doom 2 poster buried within that one track?" This particular track is "Welcome Home Great Slayer," which you can listen to for yourself just below. Over on the Doom subreddit, there's a post that claims that you can see the poster for Doom 2 in the spectrogram for one particular track on the Doom Eternal soundtrack, composed by Mick Gordon. Yes, I know what you're thinking, and working this all out has nearly broken me. You can see the original poster for Doom 2 buried within Doom Eternal's soundtrack. ![]() The old (LyX provided) 1.* installers required manually installing a variety of dependencies including imagemagick/graphicmagick, python, ghostscript and some LaTeX distro ( An old/broken version of LyX Portable is here). Version 2.0 simplifies this, as they bundle the required parts of imagemagick, python and ghostscript. An external LaTeX distro is the only dependency. 2.0 is much better than 1.*, so I'm only focusing on 2.0. It also provides (via ERT, layouts and modules) an interface to directly interact with the LaTeX backend. Thereby LyX profits from many LaTeX benefits. It is text system in its own respect that just happens to use LaTeX as back end. If you require LyX 2.0, try 'Portable LyX' or 'LyTex'. If needed, we can hack out the ghostscript, and use the PortableApps version, but I'd rather not deal with that overhead - let's just use the bundled ghostscript. IMHO it is very important to not consider LyX as an 'editor' for LaTeX. The best way to install a portable version is to try the portable installer packages listed under 'Alternatives' (at the bottom). We could also use Portable Python, but again, I think that's more effort than it's worth - plus we'll have to deal with making sure to have the right version of Python. Blender bundles python, so I say we let LyX do the same.Īs far as the LaTeX distro, I think we can use MiKTeX Portable. In fact, LyX uses MiKTeX by default on windows (see this page). I've started by unpacking it into X:/PortableApps/CommonFiles/MiKTeX. (Perhaps someone would also like to make a PortableApps installer for this?) Currently, their main executable 'miktex-portable.cmd' runs 'miktex\bin\miktex-taskbar-icon.exe'. I wonder if we'll need to run that before running LyX, and then close it when LyX closes. ![]() Most of the time, you can find a free font that looks very similar to the one you used before. You can search the Marq font library or look online. If, for example, you used an Adobe Typekit font on your InDesign Project and you don't want to pay to purchase the font as an OTF/TTF, we recommend searching for a font substitute. Option 4: Find a font substitute in Indesign or Marq Flip back and forth to closely match the formatting. It can be helpful to open the PDF found in the InDesign package as a comparison. Then, pick your font from the font dropdown. Select multiple text boxes at once by holding down Ctrl on PC (or Cmd on Mac). Once the font is uploaded, you can manually adjust the text within the Project. Even though it may not match during the import, you can still upload the font inside the editor and manually change the text to that uploaded font. If you uploaded one of the fonts from your InDesign packaged folder and you're certain that: (1) it's an OTF/TTF file type and (2) it's the exact font you need, then upload that font to Marq anyway. Option 2: Upload your font manually and replace your text Within the font manager, you can upload any OTF or TTF font file. Under "Custom Fonts", select "Manage Fonts". Select the font dropdown in the right context pane. You may want to try two or three different sites to see if you can get the font to match in Marq. Then, import the new download of the font. Some fonts are available in different formats for free online. Option 1: Find a different version of your font online ![]() You may see a pop-up that says "Auto resize failed." In this case, expand the text box length and height. Go through these steps and then click the button below to practice making adjustments!Įxpand text box If the text box does not expand completely, select one of the corners of the object and expand it out until the red (+) disappears. Because spacing is different, if there is not enough room in the text box for the new line spacing, Marq will condense the text into a red plus box. Like most online software programs, Marq counts line spacing in sections of 3, while InDesign counts in sections of 5. InDesign has different spacing parameters than Marq. "Find Missing Font" will reopen the dialog where you can upload the missing font file. "Keep Default Font" means that your text will be formatted in the Marq default font, typically Open Sans, rather than your custom font. If you click the red triangle when your font is missing, you will see two options.

![]() These included identifying tiny fragments of rock that Antarctic glaciers picked up as they scraped seaward over the continent’s surface. The scientists used multiple techniques to reconstruct past conditions. ![]() (Pierre Dutrieux/Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory) Icebergs broken off and drifting far from the coast of Antarctica are key to the initiation of ice ages, says a new study. This causes the ocean to pull increased amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, reducing the so-called greenhouse effect, and pushing Earth into ice-age conditions. Then, as the Southern Ocean gets saltier and the North Atlantic gets fresher, global ocean circulation patterns change dramatically. This, in turn, shifts huge volumes of freshwater away from the Southern Ocean and into the Atlantic. In the new study, scientists from more than a dozen institutions propose that when Earth’s orbit is just right, icebergs broken off from the coasts of Antarctica drift further and further away from the continent before ultimately melting. However, the changes are relatively small, so it has been a mystery how they bring such dramatic shifts in climate. These cycles increase or decrease the amount of solar radiation that reaches the planet’s surface. Scientists have long agreed that repeated ice ages over millions of years have been paced by cyclic changes in Earth’s orbit around the sun. The findings were published this week in the journal Nature. According to the study, the icebergs introduced freshwater into certain areas of the ocean that triggered a series of chain reactions, culminating with Earth plunging into prolonged periods of cold. Large numbers of icebergs drifting unusually far from Antarctica before melting into ocean waters have been key to initiating ice ages of the past, says a new study. ![]() I found that the choppiness was very much overstated by MacWorld’s review. The only time I really noticed dropped frames was in one area about half-way through the game where there happened to be a lot of enemies on screen in a large setting. After taking it down a notch, I was able to get it to run without any problem. You can, however, turn down the resolution, and that worked well for me. There isn’t much you can do if your hardware is lacking. They recommend at least a 2.6 Ghz quad-core processor, and a video card with 512 MB of VRAM. My year-old MacBook Pro is on the low end of supported hardware. Sadly, all of this beauty comes at a cost. ![]() Action games often fall into the trap of repetitive scenery, but each area has a very unique variation on the theme of the planet you’re on currently. The models look very good, and the environments are all very distinct looking. Audiovisual Graphicsįor the most part, this is a very pretty game. If you are dying to play as Obi-Wan, Luke, or Darth Maul, the world is your oyster. You can also skin yourself as characters from other Star Wars games and movies. You can swap between any of your outfits from previous levels, but that’s not all. Your character will appear in new duds in every new level, but you can change how you look if you so choose. If you want to alter how your laser sword will appear and function, you’ll need to go hunting for Holocrons. Interestingly, Jedi Holocrons provide you with both “Force Points” (for leveling up) and light saber crystals. In each level, there are hidden “Holocrons.” Sith Holocrons will provide you will replenished health, and the like. If you prefer to take out your foes with force lightening, then by all means upgrade your force abilities. If you prefer to focus on light saber melees, you can focus on upgrading your light saber skills. You then use these spheres on different aspects of your character’s abilities. In order to upgrade your character, you are awarded “Force Spheres” when you level up. You have to constantly be dragging in one direction. You can’t just drag upwards once, and then rest your finger there. The only other issue I’ve really found with the controls is that using the track pad doesn’t quite give the same sort of input as the game is expecting. If you prefer, you can play the entire game with an Xbox 360 controller. It is somewhat clumsy to change your target in a crowded room, but there is a solution. This is the one area where the keyboard and mouse controls really falls short. Instead of selecting your targets by clicking on them, you have to be facing them. It certainly feels more fast-paced, but you lose a lot of granular control that you got with the pseudo turn-based system from KotOR. When you press “Q,” you conjure forth lighting from your finger tips. If you click the left mouse button, you swing your light saber. The attacks are one-for-one with your input. Unlike Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, this is a full-out action game. ![]() ![]() OmniWeb compliments this surprising performance with … its surprising performance! OmniWeb is FAST! Even on my PowerMac G5 Quad, equipped with an SSD boot/applications drive, TenFourFox is still somewhat slow to launch, taking two or three Dock bounces to get going. This means that OmniWeb has been exposed to a good cross section of the web, and performed admirably for me to date. OmniWeb has performed flawlessly on all of the web pages I have tried it on so far, and that has been no small number – I have tested it as my day to day browser for about a week now. My response would be, in a word (well, in two words actually!) “very well”. As we all know, the web is evolving at light speed, and so how well does a 2 ½ year old web browser stand up to the rigors of today’s online world? This makes OmniWeb fairly current, but nonetheless still a little over 2 ½ years old as I write this post. The last stable version of OmniWeb, sporting version number 5.11.2, was released on July 23 rd, 2012. OmniWeb takes us all one year farther down the road, to 2012. Those on Leopard made it a little bit further – 2011. Those of us on PowerPC Macs running Tiger were stranded by Safari in 2010. OmniWeb, of course, turns out to be a surprisingly current web browser, and better than that, one that still runs well under both Tiger and Leopard on PowerPC Macs. I was therefore more than just a little surprised when my search for Gopher clients turned up repeated references to a program called OmniWeb, a previously unknown (to me anyway!) web browser that still runs on PowerPC Macs and apparently still supports the Gopher protocol natively. Until my research on Gopher clients it had been my assumption that not only was TenFourFox the best choice for a PPC web browser capable of navigating today’s web, it was also the ONLY choice. TenFourFox, along with its email counterpart TenFourBird, are excellent offerings that together have kept my PowerPC based Macs completely relevant even in the incredibly feature laden world of today’s internet. Perhaps it did yours too, and so I am writing a brief post about it.įor some time now, the only game in town, where PowerPC Mac OS X web browsers are concerned, has been TenFourFox.
